‘Let Them Eat Cake’, is one of the most famous quotations of all time. If Marie Antoinette was alive today, she may well have said, ‘Let Them Eat Art.’
The current craze for self publishing, creating Arts and Crafts on Etsy, Zazzle, Cafepress, Teespring, Pinterest, etc, is fantastic. These sites give artists and designers a voice. You may not make any money but even many of the greats like Van Gogh died penniless. Money is not the main reason or a reason many artists and designers create. They possess an innate hunger to create, to explore their innermost thoughts and need to express those same thoughts and desires. Art and design provides an outlet for this. Scientists have proved that you release endorphins when involved in a creative process – When you are in the zone or the flow.
The problem most budding artists and designers face is the ubiquitous critic – The inner critic and the commentator. the inner critic is their subconscious mind, who tends to kill the artist or designer before they start. The other is the so-called critic who makes a living appraising the work of the artist or designer
My advice to any artist or designer who thinks their ideas, arts and crafts has no value – ignore this and just get on with it. Confucius said, ‘A thousand Mile Walk Begins With The First Step.’
Art and Design is like anything else; ‘One Man’s Meat is Another Man’s Poison.’ My favourite quotation is by Marshal MCluhan; “Art Is Whatever You Can Get Away With.”
For 20 years, I ran one of the most famous Photographic Studios in London. We produced work for some of the greatest photographers, artists, architects, designers and photographic libraries in the world. A lot of the work was really ‘out there’ and as far as away from Da Vinci and Rembrandt as you can imagine. one famous artist sold works to museums all over the world, comprising rude text on banners – As MCluhan said; “Art Is Whatever You Can Get Away With.”
My advice is, start with a Tee Shirt – Believe me, Tee Shirt design is challenging but tremendous fun. The key is to come up with an idea. Find a campaign, a slogan, use a third-party quotation or create your own. Look on Twitter and other Social Media sites. Original thought is as rare as rocking horse manure but you may well have or have had a light bulb moment – Great – send it into the ether but put it on a design, a Tee shirt, poster, badge or Tote Bag.
Need Inspiration – Take a look at my PINTEREST SITE – If you get one idea, it will be worth it.
When every civilisation from the Romans to the Egyptians ends; art, design, language and architecture are the legacy they leave the world. You never know – when aliens eventually visit the earth in the future, they may well find your work on the internet and immortalise you in the same way we immortalise Michelangelo and Rembrandt.
If you don’t start – YOU WILL NEVER KNOW!
My name is Steve Howard – You have been reading the Digital Circus.
